Hamifgash Restaurant

Reviewed on Apr 23rd, 2008
It's probably unfair to judge a kosher restaurant when you go there during Passover, but nonetheless.....the food is ok. Not great, but not terrible. However, the prices seem high for the quantity/quality. I wouldn't write it off except that one can go to Maccabeam at 12th and Sansom and get much better food.

VIC SUSHI BAR

Reviewed on Nov 28th, 2007
This place has probably the best value for sushi in the city. It's some of the best fish in the city and surprisingly cheap. Basically, it's the perfect place for Tuesday night sushi.

If philaguerilla was ever right about something, it's this cubano. Man, was that ever a delicious sandwich. Definitely one of the best I've ever had. Let's see: meat, meat, meat, egg, meat, a chipotle, meat, avacado, and I think some more meat. Oh, and at $6.50 with the portions on par with a NY style deli, it's hands down the best sandwich value in the city.

Ludwig's Garten

Definitely a great place to drink, but the food is pretty mediocre. We started with the wurst platter and were surprised at the (small) size of the wursts the showed up. The game entrees (wild boar, venison, etc) were a nice change from the usual chicken and beef options, but the portions were quite small and the preparation nothing to write home about. In summation: a great place to knock back a few german beers that you've never had before, but eat somewhere else before you go.

Hands down, one of my favorite meals of all time. This is a no frills joint, with a simple menu - tofu soup. It's delicious, wonderful, nurturing, and all around just fabulous. I highly recommend making the trip out of the city for one of the best simply meals you can have.

Oceanaire Seafood Room

Reviewed on Jan 2nd, 2007
I had a very nice lunch here. The service could have been a bit more polished and the menu was confusing, but the food was really quite good. If there weren't such a dearth of good seafood establishments in the city, I might have rated it lower, but it's a great option for those who want the steakhouse experience, but love fish.

Probably the best Indian food in the city. However, it is most certainly not cheap.

Lafourno Trattoria Ristorante

Reviewed on Nov 20th, 2006
The only reason we wound up here was because we had a 10% off coupon from the 12th Street Gym. However, I was pleasantly surprised at not just the food but the attentiveness and friendliness of the servers. The baked penne with sausage was pleasant and fresh tasting. Overall, I would probably give LaFourno a '3' for it's food (completely fine but nothing to write home about) but the atmosphere and service bring it to a level worth recommending to friends.

Bridget Foy's South Street Grill

Reviewed on Nov 14th, 2006
I have to agree with topstair that Bridget Foy's is a great place to people watch. And going there is certainly better than going to some chain restaurant down on Delaware Ave. But, the problem is that the food doesn't taste any better than your slightly-better-than-the-exact-same-restaurant-is-across-the-street chain. So, my suggestion, go past South Street into the wide world of Queen Village, turn to the friendly person cleaning their sidwalk and say, "Excuse me, can you tell me where to get some great food?" They'll let you know where to go because they know you're trying to avoid Bridget Foy's.

Melrose Diner

Reviewed on Nov 10th, 2006
I gave the Melrose a '4' more for its importance to Philly than its food. The food is, well, diner food. And I mean that in the truest sense; not this neo-urbanistic turkey burger topped with alfalfa and boursin on a gluten-free bun sort of way. So, if you want bruque but friendly service while sitting awfully close to people you don't know while eating tres mediocre food, this is certainly the place for you. Given all of that, however, you should eat here at least once.

Though the sushi is pretty decent here, if you've got a car you should head over to Sagami. That fish just can't be beat.

Continental

Reviewed on Oct 20th, 2006
I gave it a '2' because the drinks are pretty good. The food is lousy, but that's somewhat to be expected at a Stephen Starr restaurant. Generally speaking, popular with people who don't live in the city and young 20-somethings that don't have enough creativity to explore Old City beyond the corner of 2nd and Market.

Greek Lady

Pho Cali

Reviewed on Sep 28th, 2006
I had always gone to the choo-choo for my noodles, but a friend dragged me here claiming that the noodle soup was better and, gasp, the place was clean. Well, the soup may not be better (though it's definitely just as good), but the place certainly is clean. Pho Cali is hands down my new choice for pho.

Crescent City

Reviewed on Sep 24th, 2006
Though there was nothing particularly bad about my meal, I was left with that unpleasant greasy feeling that just makes you not want to go back somewhere anytime soon. Portions are small to medium and most of the food tastes like it was designed by a good chef and executed by a high-school line cook. Overall, not worth bickering over if your friends really want to go, but certainly not of the caliber worth suggesting.

Jon's Bar and Grille

Reviewed on Jul 12th, 2006
I lived near this restaurant for 3 years and could never figure it out. The food is terrible. I mean, absolutely terrible. If you found microwaveable food in a dumpster and then proceeded to cook it over a bonfire, it would probably be better than the food here. I can only guess that the reason it's always packed is that people who live in South Jersey have no taste.

Bistro Romano

Reviewed on Jun 17th, 2006
I had the worst meal of my life in this place. The gnocci special (at $27) was clearly warmed up frozen gnocci (and not even the good stuff!). The guy singing at the piano bar had the tonality of a screeching harpy and the fingers of a rhinoceros. I would go out of my way to tell people to stay away from here.

I went to Cafe Sud after hearing great things about it. Upon ordering my $6 freshly squeezed orange juice, I was informed that they had no fresh oranges. They told me that they did have some orange juice from a container and would give me that instead. Foolishly, I thought that my tiny glass of Tropicana would somehow be cheaper than the $6 glass of freshly squeezed, but apparently, I was wrong!
