They've got some great beers that are brewed on site--they're cheap, strong, and tasty.

Pool tables upstairs and tons of televisions everywhere. Great place to watch the Birds.

Cosi

Of all the Cosi's, this is my favorite location. It's nice to sit outside here during the summertime, and I think this Cosi is open a little later than the others.

Solid Italian food at this joint across the street from abbaye in the northern liberties. It's BYOB, a good place for a couple, but able to accommodate larger parties with advanced notice.

The staff is very friendly, even familial one might say.

I didn't know this place was a Deli for the entire time I was at Penn. Then I stumbled in here and was pleasantly surprised. With Koch's just a few blocks away, I wouldn't recommend this place unless you are short on time.

La Terrasse

I had a bit of a bad experience here years ago and boycotted the place, but a happy hour where my old boss was buying free drinks brought me back, and I have to say it was decent. The appetizers were pretty tasty, and they've got some good beers on tap.

Millcreek Tavern

This place has a pretty good little music scene and is a favorite for USP students. It's a bit of a hike if you're coming from center city, but if you live in west philly, it's worth checking out.

The happy hour here has always been a lot of fun. I don't know if it's something about this place or the type of people that frequent it, but you should check it out.

They've got an open mic on Sunday nights, so check it out next time you go to the Ortleib's jam session. It's right around the corner.

Your best bet here are the reasonably priced pitchers of New Castle. I just drink out of the pitcher--trust me, you'll need that kind of refreshment on karaoke night.

Bon Jovi rocks, specially if you're from Joisy.

Pricy and trendy, but quality food and drinks. Typical Steven Star.

North by Northwest

Good place to see music, the food was decent, and the drinks were reasonably priced. This joint is out in Germantown, so it's a bit of a hike to get there.

Caribou Cafe

Reviewed on Dec 7th, 2006
I thought this place was going to be a coffee joint, but it's more of a trendy little joint that was too cool for school in my opinion. I looked at the menu and left.

Greek Lady

Not very good, but if you're on your way home from Smokes after heavy drinking, it hits the spot.

Las Cazuelas

Reviewed on Dec 7th, 2006
This is my favorite Mexican BYO in the city. Most others server sub par food and bank on you getting wasted on the margaritas they'll make you with the shitty bottle of tequila you bring.

The food here is actually pretty tasty. If I remember correctly, the salsa verde is quite good.

The Irish Pub

Reviewed on Dec 7th, 2006
I prefer the center city location to this one. The food here is not very good. More of a place to go grab a beer, catch some of a birds game, etc.

The egg sandwich will cure any hangover. I usually get ham, eggwhites, and cheese. If you don't get just eggwhites, but the person before you does, I think you end up with their yolks. In the interest of avoiding a heart attack, I'd advise you to go for the eggwhites.

They've got Sriracha!

Penang

Reviewed on Dec 7th, 2006
The penang chicken curry costs about 5 bucks and is very delicious. Also, don't leave without getting the infamous 'thousand layer bread.'

They have the exact same menu as a Malaysian place that I ate in Brooklyn. Same menu or same menu-printing company, I guess.

Eulogy Belgian Tavern

I've never eaten here, but the beers are good. The nice thing about this joint is that you can actually hold a conversation here, so if you need a break from dancing at one of the nearby clubs, check it out.

Good Dog

Reviewed on Dec 7th, 2006
The 10-12pm happy hour on Sundays at Good Dog is my favorite in the city. This place has a really relaxed atmosphere (especially since there's no more smoking inside), a good juke box, pool tables, and solid grub. In my opinion, they have the best burger in the city. I recommend the traditional burger--make sure to add grilled onion and provolone cheese.

The Good Dog salad sports goat cheese, sliced almonds, cranberries, and a delicious dressing. It's probably the only thing that prevents me from getting their awesome sweet potato fries. Make the salad for fries substitution and you won't be disappointed.

Foodery

Reviewed on Dec 7th, 2006
It took me 25 minutes to get through philaguerilla's Bottom Line--so many full stops. He is right about the Foodery, however.

The make your own sixpack gimmick is worth it if your favorite beer isn't Yeungling or Budlight or you just want to mix it up one day.

North Third has a fantastic brunch on Saturday and Sunday. The bloody mary's are so packed with interesting stuff (celery, pickles, olives, and more) that you don't need to order a salad.

They serve their awesome pirogies during brunch, which I recommend trying as an appetizer if you have a group.

The omelette's that I've tried are above average, but the black bean / egg quesadilla is not so great. They serve a monte cristo--ham, turkey, and swiss on french toast--that is simply fantastic. I highly recommend it.

They serve a nice breakfast--great after a heavy night of drinking. It's small, but cozy.

The Abbaye

They serve Guinnes and have free wireless--what more can you ask for? The open windows facing Walnut St are lovely to sit next to. I had the Amish chicken sandwich and a French onion soup when I went; the food was decent, but the atmosphere was nice. This wold be a good place to work on Sunday through Wednesday, when it's probably not as crowded.

This is a nice coffee shop for working on stuff that doesn't require you to concentrate too much. It's large, but cozy, and it is very laid back. There are lots of couches and tables, plenty of outlets, and free wireless. Last time I went, no one with a Mac was able to connect to the wireless.

Tai Lake Restaurant

Cong, what's with all the 'average' labels. The pan fried noodles are off the chain. My only words of wisdom are 'do not order too much.' The food is good enough that you'll prolly eat whatever's there and find yourself feeling really full when you leave. Two dishes will feed two - four people, so be ready to share.

White Dog Cafe

You'll definitely want to check out the happy our from 10 to midnight which runs (i think) Monday through Thursday: $2 pints of anything on tap, and they have a great selection from the local microbreweries. Try the Flying Fish Farmhouse next time you're their if it's in season. Delicious.

I've only eaten the brunch here, which was pretty good. They had a nice selection of fresh fruit and juice, as well as some tasty black bean/corn/eggs concoctions. Lovely atmosphere in the summertime with the windows open.

Better than the food, however, is the dancing. If you can stand all of the yuppies and expensive drinks, check out their salsa nights. I always have a great time when I go dancing here.

Cafe Lutecia

Reviewed on May 6th, 2006
This place has a nice atmosphere, but I would not send a tea connaisseur there. They don't have whole leaf tea, just teabags. The prices were reasonable, though, and the clientele were friendly.

Rouge

Reviewed on May 5th, 2006
Rouge was pricy, but about what I expected. I've heard the burger is one of the best in the country--it was good, but not something I would regularly pay 15 dollars for. I would, however, go back when I'm not super hungry and split the burger with someone, since it could easily feed two people. The open windows let in a lot of fresh air and sunlight, which provides for a very nice atmosphere that is worth the extra cash every once in a while.

Smile Cafe

Ocean Harbor

The food is mediocre, but the service was good and they serve Tsing Tao, which is always a good complement to any food you eat with chopsticks.

Dimsum for 9 people ended up costing about 15 bucks a person. The best dishes were those containing pork. Stay away from the sesame or general tsao's chicken. It's too sweet.

If you're feeling adventurous, try the chicken feet. Very tasty.
